Saving Your Life with Coffee

What is the value of work? What does work mean for our self-worth?

A perfect book for students who are thinking about their futures in the workforce, How Starbucks Saved My Life will make you think about your life with more flexibility. Chika M. did a wonderful job on this power point presentation. Please have a look at the visual elements of her “book commercial”!

How Starbucks Saved My Life

  1. I think I saw the movie made from this book a few years ago. The main character had to retire early from his job, lost his family, and was at the lowest point of his life. It was amazing how the main character’s life changed completely with just the dollar he used to buy coffee at Starbucks. It certainly cheered me up and I learned to never give up because you don’t know what’s going to happen until the end!
I really liked the movie so I am looking forward to reading this book. 🙂

  2. I’ve read this book and it was a fabulous one.
    I personally love Starbucks.
I really wanted to read it no matter what the story was about.
I read it and my feelings toward “working” has changed dramatically.
It made me think about how life isn’t easy and how life isn’t fair.
Lots of chances are around you, which you can use to change your future if you take advantage of them.

I really was able to go over this while reading this book and I’d really like to read more books that teach you about life.

    • You might enjoy some of Mitch Albom’s books! There are a lot of them in the CC, including Tuesdays with Morrie and Five People You Meet in Heaven. There are a lot of good ones! Enjoy!

  3. A friend of mine who loves Starbucks introduced this book to our English class and I have been wanting to read it ever since. I am interested in books that make me think deeply about life. I am just about to graduate high school and enter university and I want to open up my ways of thinking. The description of this book says that it will make you think about life with more flexibly, and that is what I need now. I hope to read this book soon.

  4. I thought that it looks like an interesting book! I’m thinking about working this Christmas vacation and if this book could be any help I would be happy to try out this book!
I have a few questions about the book. Is this book like a story form book? Also, is this a book from the English Department? If it is and if I was able to borrow it, I would like to borrow it!

    • I think we have a copy in the English Dept. collection. I would have to look at the Borrowed Books notebook to check…, but I am SURE there is one in the C.C., and you can reserve the one there, too, by filling out one of the yellow slips at the Circulation Desk!

  5. I have read the book, too, and it is one of my favorite. I liked the slideshow because it has summarized the book very concisely and it was easy to understand at the same time. What I liked about the book is that Michael Gates Gill has written about true happiness, which isn’t always about getting money or working for a big company. It has inspired me as to how I should live my life.

  6. I’ve seen this book being recommended on various television shows,
and I am thinking about reading this book over winter vacation this year.
It’s amazing how a coffe shop can change a man’s life.
